MyndVR: an immersive experience! December 10, 2020

Being able to use the virtual reality headsets with the residents allows us to go back to our roots of what recreation therapy is all about. Residents are able to have meaningful participation in a virtual intervention that stimulates them emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually.

It’s simple. Through virtual reality technology, MyndVR strives to improve the quality of life for older adults. MyndVR enables Senior Living Communities to interact with their residents in truly innovative ways that foster engagement, cognitive wellness, and above all, joy and happiness! The Radiant Care Foundation has purchased MyndVR headsets for both of our homes, allowing ample opportunity for them to be used by all of our residents. Back in May, we trialled the MyndVR headsets with residents at both homes before purchasing. The average rating by residents was 8.8 out of 10. With this high grade, the Radiant Care Foundation purchased these VR headsets as another way to Open Doors for Seniors, particularly those who have dementia.

Therapeutic Recreation Staff Perspective:
Being able to use the virtual reality headsets with the residents allows us to go back to our roots of what recreation therapy is all about. Residents are able to have meaningful participation in a virtual intervention that stimulates them emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. Residents are able to go back and experience locations they have seen before, and they have made comments like, “I’ve been there” or “this is where I was born!” These devices also allow residents to learn and see new things that they have never experienced before. Some residents enjoy seeing a Broadway play, and clap at the end of each performance. Other residents enjoy seeing a petting zoo with familiar and new animals, or taking a ride through Jurassic Park!

The impact of this technology has been widespread and wonderful for many of our residents. One resident who grew up in Italy was able to take a tour of Italy and see familiar places from her childhood. Others have been able to “travel” to see places like Amsterdam and Hong Kong, or have gone swimming with sharks! Staff assist residents in choosing virtual reality experiences that are tailored to their unique histories and interests so each experience is meaningful and purposeful to each resident and validating to their identity.

Here are some of the things that our residents had to say:

“Most of us here have not been able to travel or are not able to travel – this experience is amazing and allows us to feel like we are there!”

“This is very ingenious, this technology is amazing” – Watched the Lion King on Broadway and clapped after each performance.

“That was beautiful, thank you God” – Watched scenery of flower gardens. “It doesn’t fit my coffee cup though.”

“By golly, this is amazing.”

“Wow, Jerusalem! How I have always wanted to go there! Can I watch more!?”

“Beautiful! Made me feel like I was there” – Watched nature scenery.

“That was so real” – Traveling New York City
