Our partnership with Niagara College continues, with PSW students receiving hands-on learning experiences through a living classroom and real-world experience (placements) in both long-term care and supportive housing at our Tabor Manor site.
Three former resident rooms, in Tabor Manor’s former long-term care building, were renovated and set up like current lodgings. Mannequins are used by students in the living classroom to practice their critical skills, including how to safely lift and transfer residents to do bed changes, before working directly with them. They also learn soft skills, like establishing dynamic relationships with residents and providing care in a loving and compassionate way. After the first term of learning in the living classroom, students began their placements in long-term care, working directly with the residents.
Carolyn Triemstra, Dean of Niagara College’s Community and Health Studies, shared: “We really want to get students out there and supporting the community, and to help with the health-care crisis and health-care needs.”
Enhanced PSW student training will also help the 31 long-term care homes in Niagara with staffing in the future. Radiant Care is grateful for the opportunity to help develop potential future employees, as our staffing needs will continue to grow as we prepare for the redevelopment of Pleasant Manor’s current 41-bed long-term care home into a 160-bed long-term care home in the coming years. We will need to hire about 100 additional PSWs, as well as many RNs, RPNs, and Dietary Aides, in the next few years to meet the demands of the larger campus of care.
We are grateful for this partnership and opportunities like this to collaborate with local schools and students as we work together to prepare for a bight future in health care.
