Radiant Care Tabor Manor Long-Term Care Residents Share Their Stories April 3, 2018
Celebrating a win-win partnership between 50 Brock University Recreation and Leisure students and 100 Radiant Care residents and families.
On April 2, 2018, Recreation and Leisure students from Brock University celebrated the culmination of a unique project. 50 fourth-years students had been enrolled in Leisure and Aging since January, headed by Dr. Colleen Whyte, with all classes and experiential learning taking place at Radiant Care Tabor Manor in St. Catharines.
Brock University and Radiant Care Tabor Manor have enjoyed a fruitful partnership over a number of years, with opportunities for students and residents to interact. This is the third time the course has been held on site at Tabor, and the April 2 celebration focused on a very special aspect of this year’s curriculum. Over the past three months, each student has been paired with two residents of the Long-Term Care home, chatting, reminiscing and story-telling. The result –100 residents will now have a personalized Life Story book of stories and pictures. Students used their skills as recreationists, their skills of engagement and communication, to elicit the personality, stories and memories of the residents they partnered with. The assistance of Brock Print Services ensured a high-quality publication.
The event brought together the students, the residents, and their families, as the books were presented. It is anticipated that these books will be a valuable resource and keepsake for residents and their families.
For Radiant Care, the partnership with Brock and the focus of the course supports the organization’s commitment to serving seniors with excellence, love and dignity in a way that radiates to every aspect of care. Both Radiant Care Tabor Manor and Radiant Care Pleasant Manor are dedicated to serving the community, and the partnership with Brock University is a valuable linkage that supports that goal.
